4 Myths some People Believe about the Internet

Many people use the internet  for entertainment, communication, and to keep informed about the news. Others use it to watch pictures and videos of cats. Some of us, use it to earn our living. The Internet is perhaps the most innovative factor in modern life today.

However, there are some people who believe some things about the Internet that are just not true. Most of these people are not very computer savvy, but not all.

Al Gore didn’t invent the Internet, despite what you read somewhere online.

1. You can create something viral at will

I have had clients who come to me and ask me to create a meme, image, or video that goes viral in order to attract attention to their business.

Sadly, it doesn’t work that way. Nobody knows for sure exactly what makes something so successful that it goes viral. Companies with enormous budgets, like Coca-Cola, have tried unsuccessfully to crack the code, but have been unable to do so. On the other hand, simple strategies, like the ice bucket challenge have become much more successful than what their creators imagined.

2. You can make easy money by filling out online surveys

I don’t know where this myth comes from, but some people believe it. There have been a couple of people that have asked me “I need to make some extra money, do you know of any websites where I can get paid for filling out surveys?” If I knew, I would be earning easy money there.

Why yes, I like shoes. GIVE ME MONEY!!!

3. If you work online for a living, you’re a genius with computers

I can install basic programs or a printer, but not much more than that. However, because I work online, people think that I know a lot of computers. I have been asked to fix computers, install networks, create webpages, or make Windows run on a Mac. I have no idea of how to do any of those.

Yes, I can install a printer. No, I can’t get you into the Matrix.

4. Creating a webpage increases the number of clients for your business

Yes, if you have a company or a business, you should have a webpage for it, but it’s not a magical wand that will make clients appear out of nowhere. Many people believe that if they have a webpage, it’ll show up at the top of Google searches if someone types the product they’re selling. In fact, even if you type the name of your company, it won’t show up at the top of Google searches. Making your company appear on top of a Google search is either very difficult or very expensive.
