Start the New Year Sane

Have you had enough of holiday madness? Ready to get things started in a saner and more productive way?

It’s a new year and most people have resolutions that they swear they’re going to keep this time. However, making resolutions is not the only way to start the new year. Here are some suggestions that can help you start 2015 on the right foot.

Plus, resolutions aren't known for their rate of success.

1.- Clean your house and put things away.

This is a good way to set up the tone for the rest of the year. It will make you feel like everything is in order and will allow you to do other activities around the house more easily.

2.- Get rid of things you don’t use.

This can be done together with number one, or it can be done by itself. Go through your stuff and take out everything that you don’t use anymore. It’ll be easy to get rid of things that are broken, torn, or don’t work. However, some others may not be so easy to part with since they are still useable. In such cases, consider the following. How long has it been since you’ve used it? If it’s been longer than a year—unused through all four seasons— it’s probably time to let it go. Also, what’s the likelihood that you’ll be needing it again? Finally, in the unlikely event that you’ll need it again, how much will it cost you to replace it? It might just be cheaper in the long run to buy another one IF you need it again.

This activity will make you feel freer, lighter, and with more energy for the rest of the year.

You will probably not use some of this stuff.

3.- Volunteer for a charity you care about.

You don’t have to devote a lot of time. In fact, one day will do. Go to any event where you actually help others, as opposed to one where you pay a ticket to a nice meal or something like that.

Helping others will make you realize how lucky you are and how great your year will be compared to others less fortunate.

4.- Do that one thing you say you’ll do one day.

We all have one thing that we say we’ll do “one of these days.” Well, this is the day to do it. For some, it can be going to that museum they’ve always wanted to see. For others, it might be starting to write their book, or change the light bulb in the attic, or play a board game with your spouse. Whatever it is, this is a good chance to do it. The momentum of this first step may help you start new activities or to do other things differently during the rest of the year.

Or you can stick only to your tried and true new year's resolutions.
